Sandeep K. Dutta - IBM

Synopsis: As every organisations starts to immerse itself in the world of e-business and Internet based commerce, information is becoming the competitive advantage and data is becoming a highly prized business asset. Increasing reliance on this data has made continuous and ubiquitous access to information critical for the organisation. Moreover this has led to proliferation on complex storage systems and need for personnel and skills to manage this data.
Fundamentally there are two types of pressures, corporations are facing today how efficiently can I manage my information resources and how disruption proof they are. Effectively Protecting, Storing and Managing information growth has become a critical goal for every organisation in this changing business environments.

09:45am - 10:15am The Evolution of Storage - the Unification of SAN & Unified Storage
Anal K Jain - Network Appliance

Synopsis: As a result of technological changes and evolution of user needs, SAN and NAS are starting to merge. Within three years it will be difficult to distinguish between SAN and NAS. This is somewhat analogous to what we have seen in the Networking industry. Some years ago, routers and switches were distinct products, even sold by different companies. Today, with layer 4 and 7 switches, the two technologies have merged.
This is a healthy development. because in a situation of continuing evolution of technology and uncertainty regarding future trends, users would like to have flexibility to use the same storage system interchangeably either in NAS or in SAN mode, depending upon which approach is best in a given situation. They may even use it for access in both modes at the same time and thus avoid the need to go in for different storage systems for different needs.
This blurring of NAS and SAN is in the interests of the user, since this will speed up the adoption of Networked Storage as opposed to Direct Attached Storage, and so allow more users to realize the benefits of Networked Storage.

10:15am - 10:30am Tea/Coffee Break
10:30am - 11:00am SAN versus Unified Storage - the holy war not worth fighting

Synopsis: A holy war, of sorts, has been raging between Unified Storage and SAN vendors, with both sides incessantly trumpeting victory. The customer however has confused by the one-sidedness of each camps' claims, and rightly so! The answer is not an "either or" proposition. The real issue is 'how best to do both Unified Storage and SAN'. And the answer to the holy war is a quest for a consolidated storage solution.
Automated Networked Storage provides value to the business and the IT organization through cost reductions, the protection of greater business continuity, more business flexibility, and unmatched manageability.

Management's expect the CIO's / CTO's to help the business "make more money" , "save more money" by increasing business efficiency and deliver timely information to stay ahead of the competition. And they must do all this with shrinking or at best flat IT budgets. It is clear that as CIO's / CTO's you need to change the way you approach the storage management challenge in your organisations if you are to respond positively and meet management expectations. The Data Life Cycle Model describes how you can be smarter in defining your storage requirements and how you can lower your overall costs of storage.

But the value of virtualisation to a business goes far beyond increasing the efficiency of an environment. Virtualisation is the foundation for delivering higher value storage services for enabling availability and protection of data.
Virtualisation…. So much of what we hear today regarding virtualisation is about the technology, the architecture. It sounds complex, even though it's supposed to make life easier. So, let's not focus on how it's implemented, but rather what if offers businesses.

11:30am - 12:00pm Merging network technologies with storage networking
Surajit Sen - Network Appliance

Synopsis: The evolution of storage technologies has followed a pattern similar to the evolution of the computing architecture. It has slowly but surely moved from monolithic direct attached systems to a network centric architecture. Unfortunately the storage industry has been plagued by the lack of standards and the management nightmare resulting from it. The conundrum has more to do with the lack of a collective industry direction rather than a technological problem. The storage industry offers the users a host of choices, in terms of technologies like SAN, Unified Storage, iSCSI & DAFS, however it in turn also adds a lot of confusion to the problem. There is no unique or tailor made answer to the diverse problems faced by different customers in different application environments. More often than not customers find out the right (read working) solution the hard way after many iterations and much expense. Under such conditions the customers need to keep in mind certain criteria while benchmarking a storage infrastructure for their organisation. The key work here is flexibility. The backend storage infrastructure must offer the users the flexibility to incorporate present & future protocols in a simple way. Most customers do not know which is the right technology for their environment and whether it would suffice in the near future. Under the circumstances the best approach is to build a flexible storage infrastructure which would safeguard the investment for the near future.
