A.K. Bhatnagar belongs to the 1974 batch of Indian Broadcast (Engineering) Service. Mr. Bhatnagar took over the charge of Chief Engineer, Research Department of AIR and Doordarshan in February 2006. Research Department is presently engaged in the development of state-of-the-art broadcast equipment and systems in the following areas:- Interactive Radio & TV Systems, High Definition TV, Digital Radio, Digital TV, Data Broadcasting, High Power Broadcast Antennas, DVB-S2, MPEG-4, Mobile TV, Telemetry of Broadcast Transmitters, Propagation Studies & Investigations and Spectrum & Networking Planning of Terrestrial Digital Radio & TV Transmissions.

Till February 2006, Mr. Bhatnagar was on deputation in Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as Advisor where he was looking after Broadcasting and Cable Services. During his tenure in TRAI, he drafted important TRAI recommendations to Ministry of I&B on (a) Cable TV/CAS, (b) Private FM Radio, (c) Community Radio, (d) Satellite Multimedia Broadcasting, (e) Digitalization of Cable TV (f) Private Terrestrial TV Broadcasting and (g) DTH.

Bhatnagar has widely traveled abroad and has represented Prasar Bharati in several international conferences and meetings of Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, European Broadcasting Union, ITU Study Groups and Conferences Preparatory Meetings. He was a part of Indian Delegations to ITU’s World Radio Communication Conferences held in Geneva in 1987, 1997 and 2003 which took important decisions on Radio and TV broadcasting.

He has large number of published papers to his credit.
